AISI 301 Stainless Steel is an austenitic stainless steel containing approximately 16–18% chromium (Cr) and 6–8% nickel (Ni). It is well known for its excellent work-hardening capability, high strength, and good corrosion resistance. While non-magnetic in the annealed condition, it becomes magnetic after cold working. It is widely used in the manufacture of springs, automotive components, aerospace parts, and household products.
Key Characteristics:
- Excellent Work-Hardening Capability: Due to its lower nickel and chromium content compared with AISI 304 stainless steel, AISI 301 exhibits a significantly higher work-hardening rate during cold working, allowing it to achieve very high tensile strength.
- Corrosion resistance: AISI 301 provides corrosion resistance comparable to AISI 304 under normal atmospheric conditions. However, it is generally not recommended for highly aggressive chemical environments because carbide precipitation may reduce its corrosion resistance under certain conditions.
- Strength and Ductility: This grade offers excellent mechanical strength, impact resistance, and elasticity, making it particularly suitable for spring applications.
- Fabrication and Formability: In the annealed condition, AISI 301 is easy to weld, cut, and form into complex shapes.
