304 Stainless Steel is the most widely used austenitic stainless steel grade, commonly referred to as 18/8 stainless steel due to its approximate composition of 18% chromium and 8% nickel. It offers excellent corrosion resistance, high ductility, and outstanding formability, making it ideal for kitchen equipment, food-processing applications, and architectural uses. This grade is generally non-magnetic, durable, and highly weldable.
Key Characteristics:
- Composition: Primarily composed of iron, with approximately 18–20% chromium (Cr) and 8–10.5% nickel (Ni).
- Corrosion Resistance: Provides excellent resistance to rust and corrosion in a wide range of environments, including food-processing applications and exposure to many organic chemicals.
- Heat Resistance: Offers good oxidation resistance during intermittent exposure to elevated temperatures and continuous service at lower temperatures, depending on operating conditions.
- Magnetic Properties: Generally non-magnetic in the annealed condition. However, it may become slightly magnetic after cold working or deformation.
- Fabrication and Formability: Its high ductility allows for excellent deep-drawing, forming, and fabrication performance, making it suitable for complex manufacturing processes.
